7 most effective martial arts for street battles

Is there the most effective type of martial arts for street fighting or real fight/street fight?
It's a tough question, because choosing 1 the best of so many types of martial arts in the world is certainly not an easy thing. In Indonesia alone when this article is made, there are at least hundreds of Pencak Silat schools that all have their own techniques. Not to mention when coupled with martial arts from other countries the list is certainly getting longer. We believe that all martial arts are created not for a mere being, but purely for the sake of self-defence. But choosing the most effective self-defense/The Most Effective is really hard.

But among the many martial disciplines that exist, which is roughly the most recommended martial arts practitioners for street combat?

This question brings Uniklopedia to explore the answer by collecting the opinions of self-defense practitioners scattered across several English-language websites. With Google assisted, we finally gathered the opinions of self-defense practitioners.

The result was surprisingly Sodara-Sodara.

From the opinions of dozens of self-practising practitioners when asked a martial of what is most effective for a real fight/street fight almost everything compact answered:

 "None "

Yes, disappointing indeed, but they think that's the fact. The reason is the factor that determines a person to be able to win in the street fight situation it a lot, not only lies in the martial itself. There are physical factors, mental factors, stamina factors, talent factors, experience factors and exercise factors. It still added external factors such as the number of opponents faced, weapons used by opponents, martial skills of the opponent, and so forth.

It turns out that martial arts factors should be supported by other factors as such. In summary, the practitioners think it is effective or whether a martial art is very dependent on the person as well.

This explains why there is a martial arts practitioner who is just as short as the thugs who do not have martial arts in the street.

Many martial practitioners are precisely suggesting:

"If you do not want to lose a fight against anyone, then the best solution is not to fight with anyone. "
Cliché really huh? But our body agrees with this opinion. Because the nature of the street fight is "no rules " and "no referee " then anything can happen even to the worst possible. Therefore the best number one solution is to avoid conflicts as much as possible. Don't look around and memancing-mancing things. The best solution number two if stuck in the situation is to dodge, and do not be very sorry, if you need to shout for help, or run. These two tips are the best solution.

Then what about self-defense?
Their martial arts place as the last option. It means if it is already very forced and there is no way to dodge ya use martial.

Then the question continues..

Continue, if there is no martial type that can be called  "The Most Effective" and then roughly what are some martial arts recommended for street combat?

The answer: "There are several "

But nobody gives exactly the same answer. Each martial practitioner has its own list based on their individual observations, studies, and experiences. The practitioners also emphasized that the street fight situation was not the same as the battle in the MMA. So don't let you think these two things are the same.

Real Fight and MMA differences

Mixed Martial Arts Tournaments can be said to be a free fighting, and there are still rules and referees. The fighter fights in a very ready-to-combat condition, because it has been prepared in the distant days. Risk of injury can be minimized. And the MMA is obviously a fair fight.

While street fight/real fight there is no rule let alone referees. Do not expect the fight will run fair. The conditions in street fight situation are often uncontrolled, you can be attacked from behind or hit, not to mention if there are weapons of various kinds of wood beams, rocks, or sharp weapons such as knives. When we are again 1 vs 1, there can suddenly be a stab at our neck from behind. Not so Wassallam we

So with the condition of the battlefield such a kind of martial-like what is suitable and effective?

1. Boxing
How effective is boxing for self-defense?
The Easy answer: it's very effective.
(Wim Demeree)

Wim Demeree is a martial art & self defence teacher from Brussels Belgium who has been in the martial arts for over 30 years. It says: The excellence of boxing is simple, pragmatic, and arguably the most applicative in the field. It is not only dangerous in the ring but also on the streets.

Helio Gracie the creator Gracie JiuJitsu or Brazilian JiuJitsu praises boxing as the most effective martial after Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Summarily there are 3 components that make Boxing very effective for self defence.

Punch.

The focus is only to train both hands with a slight variety of punch attacks, but it continues to increase the punch power of both hands until it has a very strong and fast blow.

Defense.

Train ways to overcome attacks such as repelling attacks, closing opponents ' attacks, avoiding opponent attacks like Dodge, and arranging and keeping the distance with opponents.

Repeat.

You just need to train two things on the top continuously until you are proficient.

In principle only 3 that thing. It feels very simple, but after we check on YouTube, martial boxing turns out to be very effective for real fight situation. Opponents are difficult to lay 1 punch alone into the boxing practitioner's face because the frisky practitioner once evaches the opponent's blow, and some of the videos we see, the practitioners beat the opponents who are overdoing them with just 1 punch. Yes, 1 punch only, not 2 let alone a lot of punch. Enough 1 strong punch toward the jaw of the opponent, and the opponent immediately fell down the street. The impression we saw, boxing is very simple, file, but really effective. Video Link Please Ubek yourself on YouTube yes. It's hard.

Boxing can be used for 1 vs 1 Empty hand fights even 1 vs. Keroyokan until 3 people are also still effective. You can combine it with the techniques of grapling Gracie Jiu Jitsu or Judo techniques for more complete your technique for any combat situation. Take care if you fall down and have to fight ground fighting.

In history, Martial fist has a very tough boxing legend. He was named Theagenes of Greece. It is said that he has competed for 1,406 times during his lifetime and was known as Olympic champion in the boxing branch in 450 BC. Surely he has also killed many fighters because of boxing gloves that were worn at that time in the contents of hard objects such as metal slabs. Theagenes is truly a street fighter and a very tough tournament.

Uniklopedia puts this self-defense in the first order. A sign of this martial type is high recommended. Moreover, in Indonesia, the boxing workshop is not very difficult to find, if not there, exercise itself can also, techniques can see on YouTube or buy a boxing DVD. The exercises are just that-that's all, there are no secret moves or skills that require the use of certain types of breathing. Simple, pragmatic, efficient and effective!

2. Muay Thai
"Muay Thai-The Ultimate in Self Defence "
(Ajarn Nick Hewitson)

Ajarn Nick Hewitson's black belt holder in 14 martial arts including the 6th holder and at Tae Kwon Do. 2 times world champion Muay Thai Boxing and Invincible in 120 professional matches. He said: Thai Boxing or Muay Thai is The most effective Self Defense System in The World a.k.a. the world's most effectively self-defense system. According to Hewitson Muay Thai also dubbed as "King of The Ring" because he thinks Muay Thai has defeated many other types of martial arts in the arena.

Muay Thai and Thai Boxing flourished hundreds of years ago in Thailand and now it has become a national sport of Thai Nation. Muay Thai derivative of martial arts named "Muay Boran " is a more brutal version of Muay Thai. During the reign of King Phra Cao Sua (1702), also known as "Tiger King", he used Muay Thai for his entire army.

Muay Thai is also known as the art of 8 limbs because it actually maximizes 8 points of body as a weapon, 8 points are 2 strokes, 2 kicks, 2 knees, and 2 elbows. In Muay Thai the fist is as the sword and Dagger, the hands and arms act as shields, elbow used as a rod or hammer, the legs and knees act as axes, while the body operates 8 points into one unit of combat machine.

The techniques of fighting Muay Thai in general are 5 parts: punch technique, elbow technique, kick technique, knee attack technique, and foot boost technique. In addition Muay Thai also equipped Clinch fighting & Bantingan. To avoid the blow of the heavy opponent, the fighter can shorten the distance by doing a hug/clinch. In close proximity, fighters can do a distraction.

Hewitson called Muay Thai was the harsher full body contact exercise. Almost all the technical applicative for the fight for both MMA and street combat. It can also be used for 1 vs 1 empty hand combat, and is still effective for 1 vs 3 people. He is also still dangerous to be taken by fighters from other martial disciplines. The technical effectiveness and combat style is guaranteed by many martial practitioners around the world.

In its history Muay Thai also has a very tough fighter legend. The year 1774 has been known to be a fighter named Nai Khanom Tom, due to his war against Burma. At that time he was caught with some people from the city of Siam (now Thailand) called Ayyuthaya, then imprisoned in Burma. Nai Khanom Tom was a great fighter of his time. He represented his friends in a battle contest held by King Mangra. Without a hitch, he defeated the ten best Burmese fighters at once with bare hands. Afterwards the King granted freedom as his prize, and he returned to Ayyuthaya as a hero.

Uniklopedia puts Muay Thai in its second order. And recommend Muay Thai after Boxing. The technical is quite easy to learn, very applicative in the field, but it takes a serious and continuous practice to train the body, training the power of blows and kicks. Can be combined with Gracie Jiu jitsu to complement the needs of ground fighting. Muay Thai itself began to be popular in Indonesia, apparently it is not very difficult to find workshops and training partners.

3. Pencak Silat
"Silat is a truly amazing and combat-efficient martial art developed across Southeast Asia "
(Burton Richardsons)

Burton Richardsons is one of the most sought-after functional martial instructors in the world. Each year he is invited in various countries to provide seminars and private courses to martial arts instructors, students from martial artists, military personnel and police members.

All Indonesians must have heard of Pencak Silat martial arts. But when this article was written it is still rare people are interested because Pencak Silat is generally too much dance. Dances are not applicative to fight and will not be effective for street combat.

But we've seen fights where 1 high school student wins against 7 other high school students who The student is a student of one of the Silat colleges in Banten.

On another occasion we have seen a middle-aged father who attacked 2 armed young knives in Bogor but the father can paralyze the two young man. The technique we see is the typical capture technique of silat.

So is silat effective for street combat?

According to Burton Richardsons Silat is effective for real fight situation. The technique of Silat contains many moves that focus on attacking the vital points of the human body. The principle of the Silat attack is paralyzing the opponent as quickly as possible by attacking the vital part of the opponent with the skills resting on speed. At the beginning, Silat was not created for sports purposes, but purely self-defence.

Silat for MMA
Burton Richardsons once tried to fight in the MMA using the Silat, he tried to customize the Silat movement to comply with the MMA regulations. After trial & error looking for a suitable kick for MMA for several months Richardsons finally gave up. The conclusion he get is the Silat he learns is not suitable for MMA. Many techniques that can not be worn because it is illegal in the MMA, although the good silat in the clinch fighting but weak in the ground fighting, whereas the fighters MMA Jago ground fighting.

But if the question of whether Silat is suitable for real fight?

Richardson has always taught some silat techniques that are suitable for real fight situation in various markets. He even advocated martial arts practitioners to complement his martial arts skills with some techniques of silat.

In one of the outside martial arts websites, when discussing the most effective martial art for real combat, he included Pencak Silat as the 1 of 5 most effective martial arts in the world.

Unfortunately we could not decide which Pencak Silat College is the most good. In Indonesia alone in the year 2013 there are about 200 an registered Pencak Silat College. All of them have their own technique.

However, if you want a recommendation from Uniklopedia, after looking at some of the demo Pencak Silat from several Pencak Silat on YouTube, we recommend you to see the Tiger Silat and the Buffalo Silat from the land of Minang. Silat Harimau has a sturdy gesture, jurus-jurusnya unique, very solid and brutal. According to our observation, Tiger Silat when combined with martial arts will be a very difficult opponent. Meanwhile, Buffalo Silat is similar to the Spanish martial arts Fighting Method, created specifically for Street martial arts. Silat Buffalo is suitable for street fighting. The unique of the Buffalo Silat was taught and spread by the Italians. While in Indonesia it seems that this flow has been very rare.

In Europe you can see the silat in pure form, no art of motion, but purely self-defence. There are some overseas martial instructors that you can check on Youtube. One of them is Franck Ropers. The French male who studied Silat from the PSHT flow. In his hands Silat was even adopted so martial arts some special forces in France.

Below are 1 video of some sort of comparative study of Krav Maga with Silat. Krav Maga is known one of the most brutal and most effective self-defence in the world. Techniques Krav Maga You can see in this video, and Silat also shows the techniques that are not less brutal and effective from the Krav Maga.

For a tough Silat figure there are many. But not many historical records write it. Most are stories of word of mouth from generation to generation. One of them is Sabeni, the legend of Silat creator kick  "Kelabang Nyebrang ". It is said that he always wins against the enemy, even against some kung fu swordsman from China. And it is said that he was able to defeat several karate fighters from Japan at the age of 83 years.

Uniklopedia recommends Pencak Silat not because of its ancestral product, but because it is martial is intended to paralyze and kill opponents with lightning fast movements. Silat techniques such as plug the eye until the kick crotch guaranteed remover to quickly end the fight.

4. Krav Maga

Self Defence is so popular and Digadang-gadang as the most effective self defence for real world situation. The philosophy of Krav Maga is to neutralize threats as quickly as possible by simultaneously enduring and aggressive attack maneuvers. This philosophy selects the techniques of super-efficient attacks and ways of surviving with a brutal counter attack.

Krav Maga was created by Imi Lichtenfeld, a Hungarian-Israeli. He has won the Slovak wrestling competition and won the National boxing championship. He created special martial arts for the defence of Jewish troops from the attack of the fascist organization in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia around 1930-1940. The special martial is named Krav Maga.

Techniques Krav Maga is a selection of various martial arts styles such as Aikido, Judo, Boxing, Wrestling and others. Although it is labeled as the most effective self-defence, the practitioners of Krav Maga are always encouraged to avoid confrontation when the situation is not possible.

Basic principles of Krav Maga

  • Complete the fight as fast as possible! The quicker, the better.
  • Attack the most vulnerable parts of your opponent's body! This principle makes some attacks can result in permanent disability or death.

The concept of Krav Maga among others:
  • Counter Attack as fast as possible.
  • Attack the vital part of the opponent. Body parts such as eyes, neck, throat, face, solar plexus point, crotch, rib, joints, fingers, liver, etc.
  • Efficient attacks but make sure to collapse the opponent as half as possible.
  • Always be as good as the surroundings. Look for gaps for exits and find objects in the surrounding environment that can be used as weapons or as shields.

We recommends Krav Maga as the most effective martial arts for street combat. Just like the Silat, the Krav Maga is also not suitable in MMA. There are many techniques of Krav Maga that are illegal in MMA. But for the street fight it's your opponent who must be careful, because the risk of fighting with the practitioner Krav Maga is a permanent disability.

In Indonesia it seems that there is no one who teaches Krav Maga, but every year there may come from abroad to give seminar Krav Maga.

5. Systema
Although both military martial arts, the Systema is still less popular than the Krav Maga. But the problem of effectiveness for real fight situation, Systema is martial for Spetsnaz, his Special Forces unit of Russian military. The fighting technique is very applicative not only in the streets but also on the battlefield.

The martial root of Systema comes from the self-defense of Mongolian troops who had occupied Russia for 400 years around 948. This self-defense was initially influenced by some Chinese martial arts. As the time progressed, ancient martial techniques were adopted by the Russian military as military martial arts. At the end of World War I The fighting technique was perfected so that it became one of the most effective bare-hand martial in the world.

Enhanced Systema by a World War veteran I named Spiridonov. He, along with a group of Russian scientists, was assigned to create a martial which could be used in any situation, deadly, efficient and effective.

After Spriridonov succeeded, he then presented it to the Russian military. The results of the officials were amazed at this martial arts and they regarded it as the best bare-hand fighting system ever created by humans. Spiridonov named the system as Systema SAMOZ, a self-defense system that contains the principle of simplicity in fighting, movements based on logic, flexibility, and cleverness.
Systema concept

Systema is not naming Jurus-jurusnya as traditional Chinese or Japanese martial arts in general. Jurus-jurusnya is based on a biomechanics theory of human body. It is intended to find motion patterns that have a maximum impact when attacking or during counter attack but with a minimum effort. In summary Systema is an efficient yet effective self-defense system with attack and counter attack patterns.

Key element Systema & Tehnik
  • Respiratory
  • Movement
  • Attack resistance
  • Punch
  • The theory of the Trinity body parts: Mind, physical, soul. All are maximized for the sake of self defence.
  • Low Acrobatic. A set of lightweight stunt movements for martial arts purposes. Such as safe ways to fall and how to bounce quickly with a profitable position.

The Systema fighting techniques include:

-Empty hand fight
-Knife or weapon battles
Shoot.

But for civil use, shooting exercises and military-style firearms exercises are eliminated.

Training includes skills and a sparring practice with no skills. The exercises are focused on mastering the control of six body sections (elbows, neck, knees, waist, joints and shoulders) through the application of pressure points, beating and applied weapons

Uniklopedia recommends Systema and is a favorite of Uniklopedia. Systema presentation on YouTube is very unique, simple, effective, file, suitable for all situations. 1 vs 1, Keroyokan, and how to knock out opponents with sharp weapons or firearms. In Kaskus there are already threads discussing Systema, there seems to be some people in Indonesia who learn the Systema.

6. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
"Jiu Jitsu is Perfect. It's human who makes it errors  "
(Rickson Gracie)

A teacher from Helio Gracie founder Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a Japanese man named Mitsuyo Maeda. Mitsuyo Maeda is a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and a very tough fighter. It is said that he has won more than 2000 battles during his lifetime. Mituyo Maeda was also regarded as one of the toughest humans of his day.

It is actually a bit hard to choose between Jiu Jitsu with Gracie Jiu Jitsu/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) to be included on this list. Jiu Jitsu herself is an empty hand martial that is really devoted to street fight, thus allowing to use the way "what AJA can " even tactics  "cheat " such as plug the eye, bite and various other illegal techniques. The goal is obvious: paralyzing opponents as quickly as possible! Jiu Jitsu is also the mother of some other martial arts from the Japanese of Judo and Aikido even up to Krav Maga from Israel. But our selection fell on Gracie Jiu Jitsu to inhabit this list. BJJ is considered the toughest for ground fighting. Ground fighting often occurs when 1 vs 1 in street combat.

BJJ is quite effective and efficient, especially for 1 vs 1 battles. The techniques of the BJJ of Helio Gracie have been proven capable of being used to conquer opponents with a much larger body, even in the fight with an opponent who has martial skills as well as BJJ techniques prove to be very troublesome opponent. This is what makes BJJ in demand by many circles, and even the UFC and MMA fighters also equip their fighting skills with the BJJ techniques for the UFC match.

Powerful BJJ style fighters are pretty much. The famous of course the founder: Helio Gracie, after which the clans of the Gracie family such as Royce Gracie (UFC fans must be familiar with this name) and Rickson Gracie who is often dubbed as  "The Strongest Man In The World " because it was said during his career he never lost. He was unbeatable in 400 battles!

BJJ was very helpful in street fight situation considering the many fight that the edges ground fight. But many suggest adding to the skills of other martial disciplines to accompany BJJ, such as Boxing, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, or others. The reason is precisely to avoid ground fight. No one wants to ground fight on paved roads, dirt, or hard floors. Another reason for BJJ is effective for 1 vs 1, but is at risk for opponents over 1.

7. Jeet Kune Do

"I always believe that the easy way is the right way. Jeet Kune Do is simply the direct expression of one's feelings with the minimum of movements and energy.  "
(Bruce Lee)

Bruce Lee did not consider Jeet Kune Do (JKD) as a martial-arts stream. Jeet Kune Do is actually a philosophy or a concept. However, Uniklopedia considers Jeet Kune Do's philosophy to be enlightened by self-defense practitioners. In martial arts, the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do is a philosophy that will liberate and make you yourself.

Jeet Kune Do is a philosophy to produce a fighting style formula without the need to be stunned or limited by a certain pattern of martial arts. Bruce Lee called it  "style with no style ". This philosophy makes everyone can learn various types of martial arts in order to find a fighting system that is suitable for himself. That's the philosophy that Bruce Lee wants to convey.

Bruce Lee was originally a Wing Chun martial artist who was full of real fight/street fight experiences. Although Lee is often nowhere but he is not interested in participating in martial arts tournaments like Karate or Boxing. However, Lee had a perfect record in the real fight. Bruce Lee hasn't ever lost!

At the beginning of his birth, Jeet Kune Do was after many fights, Lee felt dissatisfied, because even though he won but often it took a long time to beat his opponent. From the experience of nowhere, Lee concluded a fight that risked life should be completed in the shortest possible time.

From there, Bruce Lee saw the martial of his time too stiff and not as a dismay because it was very fixed in the pattern. While in real fight situation your opponent's attacks are always spontaneous, difficult to predict, all you need to do is react to the attack. Lee saw the kick and martial techniques instead limiting and making it unflexible. Lee argues: You need to free yourself from a certain pattern in order to be as flexible as possible when fighting. Therefore the practitioners of Jeet Kune Do are required to be very flexible in the techniques when fighting.

Bruce Lee said, "When you get stuck in a fight, you don't need to be giddy about skills and martial arts techniques. When you hit or kick if the result is ineffective, you can drag, stab, bite, root, poke or whatever. Just do everything you can to keep you safe, because it's your first priority.  "

Lee then began studying other martial disciplines such as Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Wrestling, Anggar, Judo, and so on to find effective techniques for martial arts. That is why Bruce Lee is considered the father of MMA in the modern world.

Principles of Jeet Kune Do-The Way of Intercepting Fist ala Bruce Lee
  • The best surviving way is by attacking.
  • The Way of Intercepting Fist is invasied opponent's attack. That is when the opponent attacks, immediately interceps the attack by the way to ward off the attack that comes with a counterattack.

Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do's idea
  • Straight Lead. Punch is accurate and rests on speed.
  • Non-telegraphed Punch. Quick punch techniques such as unplanned.
  • Be like water. Don't get tied, react alone to your opponent's attack.
  • Economy of motion. Streamline and simplify movement but effective for disabling.
  • Stop Hits. Take advantage of moments when opponents attack with counterattack.
  • Low Kicks. Avoid kicking the top of your opponent's waist, kick for the waist down area only.
  • 4 Range of Combats. Master 4 Types of attacks: punch, kick, lockdown and Grappling.
  • 5 Ways of Attack. Master 5 Types of attacks. Direct attack, combination attack, indirect attack, immobilization attack, draw attack. Centerline. Keep the body in the direction of the eyes always faced with opponents to control combat.
  • Combat Realism. Focus on finding the app for real fight.

An example of a powerful fighter with the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do ya founder Bruce Lee. He was also often the most powerful fighter of his day. It is said that after Jeet Kune Do was created, Bruce Lee was able to beat his opponent faster than before Jeet Kune Do. Often it only takes a few seconds to beat his opponent. Jeet Kune Do is truly a precious legacy of a martial maniac who dedicates itself to the advancement of Martial arts.

We recommend for anyone to study the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. We feel style with no style is the true answer to the most effective martial arts questions for street combat. This philosophy will bring its practitioners to find themselves the most effective fighting style for himself. Citing the sentence of Bruce Lee, Jeet Kune Do is just a boat to deliver you to yourself.

"Empty your mind, be formless, cotton — like water. You put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.  "
(Bruce Lee)
